Studying Project Management with UAA

Since December 2002, the College of Engineering has offered the Master of Science in Project Management for over 110 University of Alaska Anchorage post-grads to better improve team productivity with impactful leadership. Chaired by Dr. LuAnn Piccard, an AMSE Project Excellence Award winner, the 33-credit degree aligns to PMI objectives for optional execution of organizational operations. Working adults easily access content on Blackboard and attend live meetings using Cisco TelePresence Movi. Expect MSPM courses like Stakeholder Engagement, Systems Engineering, and Project Procurement with a 12:1 student-professor ratio. Second-year students can choose the 695 course for 15-week internship placements, such as CIRI, NANA Development, R&M Consultants, Quantum Spatial, Doyon Utilities, and Stephl Engineering. Other Anchorage opportunities include researching in the Construction Materials Lab, taking the PMP Certification exam prep course, engaging in Project Lead the Way, attending the Bartlett Lecture, and joining the AISES Chapter.

The University of Alaska Anchorage started the Matanuska-Susitna Borough’s first college-level courses at Elmendorf Air Force Base in 1954, five years before statehood, with an inaugural class of 414. Initially called Anchorage Community College, it granted its initial bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 1971. PayScale calculated the 46th best mid-career median salary of $71,000 at Anchorage. In Washington Monthly, UAA has the 20th most research expenditures and 161st best financial aid. University of Alaska Anchorage Accreditation Details

In Fall 2017, the University of Alaska Anchorage satisfactorily passed its year-seven evaluation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) to retain the highest Level VI accreditation under its 14th president, Dr. Jim Johnsen. Located over 2,250 miles south in Redmond, Washington, this seven-state regional accreditor has authority from the U.S. Department of Education to check the institutional effectiveness in UAA’s 29 associate, 60 baccalaureates, eight master’s, nine certificate, and six doctoral majors. Through 2022, the College of Engineering is accredited by the Accreditation Board on Engineering and Technology (ABET). The Master of Science in Project Management was also among the nation’s first 13 to get approved by the Project Management Institute (PMI) Global Accreditation Center (GAC).

University of Alaska Anchorage Application Requirements

Getting into the University of Alaska Anchorage is deemed “minimally difficult” by Peterson’s because 80 percent of the Fall 2016 applicants were accepted. Post-grad Seawolves swimming toward the Master of Science in Project Management must hold a four-year bachelor’s or foreign equivalent. Preference is given for STEM majors like engineering, physics, and construction management. At least one inferential statistics class is prerequisite. Full MSPM admission mandates completing the first nine credits in courses 601-603 with minimum “B” grades. Cumulative GPAs in the last 60 undergrad hours should breach 3.0. Passing the Graduate Record Exam with verbal and quantitative scores over 150 is expected. UAA Online seeks adults with 2+ years of project management experience. Non-native English speakers must also achieve a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or TOEFL iBT score of 79.

The University of Alaska Anchorage published a general graduate deadline of June 15th for Summer, July 15th for Fall, and November 1st for Spring starts. Tuition and Financial Aid

For 2016-17, the University of Alaska Anchorage charged in-state MSPM tuition of $444 per credit. Non-resident tuition jumps to $907 per credit. The Western Regional Graduate Program provides an in-state exception for residents of 14 states from New Mexico to Washington. Please note the M.S. in Project Management has “Super Tuition” that doubles the price to fund development though. Therefore, the MSPM fee adds $444 per credit. One online course now costs Alaskans $2,664 and non-residents $4,053. Online UAA students skip the room and board expense of $9,912, but budgeting $1,864 yearly for books is suggested. The 33-credit master’s has an estimated total price of $29,304 in-state or $44,583 out-of-state.

According to the NCES College Navigator, 42 percent of full-time UAA Seawolves receive median financial aid packages worth $5,201 for $34.3 million yearly. The College of Engineering provides funds like the Maynard Tapp Scholarship, McReavy Graduate Endowed Scholarship, Alvin G. Ott Scholarship, Ruth Croxton Fellowship, Charles E. Behlke Scholarship, Pate Family Scholarship, Rodney P. Kinney Scholarship, and Siemens Industry Scholarship. The PMIEF has numerous opportunities, including the $2,500 PMI Alaska Chapter Scholarship. Completing the FAFSA application with code 011462 can open William D. Ford Federal Direct Unsubsidized or Graduate Plus loan. The Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education presents awards, such as the Indian Higher Education Grant. Veterans are entitled to Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits from the Yellow Ribbon Program. The University of Alaska Anchorage also has limited 20-hour graduate assistantships.
