Sports Management Programs
Drexel University offers both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Sport Management. The BS program provides students with a strong foundation that will help them when they go right into the field or when they decide to study sports management at the graduate level. The university expects students to complete the general education core and that they take both business classes and sports management courses. Students will take business classes that include Introduction to Finance, Management Information Systems and Introduction to Business Statistics.
Undergrads must also take 12 required courses that comprise the sport management core, including Sport Media Relations, Digital Media in Sport, Sports Event Management and Sports Marketing, Promotion and Public Relations. Drexel expects students to take at least three sports management electives too. In addition to doing an internship or a practicum, students can take courses such as Decision Making in Sport Business, Fundraising in Sports and Olympic Games.
The MS in Sport Management program allows students to learn more about the business side of sports. They will take three required business courses and seven required sports management classes. Some of those required courses can include Sports Industry Management, Negotiations for Leaders, Social Issues in Sports and Sport Media and Public Relations. They must also take a seminar course or complete an independent study project or a practicum. Drexel University also offers a program that allows students to earn a BS in Sport Management and an MBA.
About Drexel University
Founded in 1891 as the Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry, Drexel University is a large university in Pennsylvania. The school started life as an institute that offered career training programs for its students. It originally wanted to provide them with practical training in different areas that would help them once they completed their studies. The institute was unique because it required that all students complete training programs similar to the internships that students do today. It became the Drexel Institute of Technology in 1936 and Drexel University in the 1970s.
Drexel now divides itself into more than 10 colleges that each remains dedicated to a specific field of study such as its College of Arts and Sciences and its Center for Hospitality and Sports Management. The university also has its own online college. Not only does Drexel University rank as one of the best colleges in America today, but it also ranks as one of the world’s top schools. Drexel now operates three campuses in and around Philadelphia that welcome students from any state or country. The university once operated a campus in Sacramento, California too but shuttered that campus to focus on its Pennsylvania and online campuses. Enrollment at Drexel University now includes more than 26,000 students.
Drexel University Accreditation Details
Both undergrads and graduate students use federal financial aid to cover some or all of their educational costs and expenses. Students who need financial aid and plan on using the FAFSA must make sure that their schools have regional accreditation. The regional accreditation that Drexel University has comes from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). MSCHE is also important because it’s a requirement for transfer students who want the university to accept the college credits they already earned. Though the university has specialty accreditation for many of its programs, the most important type of accreditation for business majors comes from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AASCB). AACSB accreditation applies to all of the university’s degree programs relating to business, including its undergrad and graduate programs in sports management.
Drexel University Application Requirements
The application that students use and the process that they follow will differ based on whether they want to enroll in a graduate or undergraduate program. Undergrads applying for an early decision must submit their applications by November 1. The university will notify them of its decision by the middle of December. They will then have until January 15 to pay their deposits. Drexel requires both a housing and a tuition deposit. All other students have until January 15 to submit their applications and will receive a decision by the beginning of April.
Undergrads must submit the online application, which is the same one that transfer students use. This application has a $50 fee attached to it. They must also provide Drexel with letters of recommendation, a personal essay, their official transcripts and a standardized test score. The university may ask for a writing sample and/or a portfolio also.
The process for students applying to the university’s graduate sports management program is quite similar. Those students will submit an online application and send the university their official transcripts. They must also submit a letter of recommendation from a professional reference and a second letter written by an academic reference. Grad students must submit a resume and an essay of no more than 1,000 words that describes their strengths and weaknesses as well as any experience or interest they have in sports management. Drexel only accepts grad students who have a bachelor’s degree. It recommends that students have a 3.0-grade point average and at least two years of work experience also.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Drexel charges part-time undergrads a rate of $1,144 per credit hour. Those students will also pay fees of $150 each semester. Full-time students pay a little less than $17,000 a semester, which allows them to take up to 18 credits of classes. Both part-time and full-time graduate students pay $1,265 per credit hour for any classes that they take. The university charges fees of $280 for full-time students and $140 for part-time students. Grad students pay those fees each semester, regardless of how many credits they take.
The university divides its financial aid options into institutional aid and government aid. Students who need aid should complete and file the FAFSA by the beginning of spring. The university recommends that they file this form even earlier. Federal aid can include Pell grants and other types of grants as well as student loans. Undergrads receive subsidized student loans, while graduate students get unsubsidized student loans. PLUS loans for students and special loans for parents and guardians are also available. Drexel University also allows students to take part in its federal work-study program and to apply for one or more of its scholarships.
