Master’s in Sports Industry Management

Georgetown University offers a sports management program designed to help graduate students learn how to look at sports as a business. Students can earn a Master’s in Sports Industry Management through classes they take on its Washington DC campus or through an online format. Both programs feature the same 30 credits of classes and both allow students to learn from some of the nation’s top instructors.

Students will find that this program is quite flexible. They can enroll as full-time or part-time students. Part-time students can take just one class a semester and graduate within five years. Full-time students take more credits every semester and graduate in just one year. Those in the on-campus program will have the chance to work with student-athletes and with some of the sports organizations on that campus.

This program consists of four foundation classes, four electives, and two core classes. Those core classes include Applied Ethics in Sports and a Sports Industry Management Capstone. The capstone requires that students research a topic that relates to the theme of the class and do a final paper on that topic. Georgetown does not require that students do a thesis. The four foundation classes that they take are worth 12 credits and include Sports Leadership and Management, Social Responsibility and Globalization in Sports, Sports Marketing Strategy and Sports Business and Finance.

Students have more flexibility when it comes to the electives that they take. Georgetown encourages students to take electives that appeal to them and those that might help them in their careers. Students can also select a concentration in Sports Communications, College Sports Administration or Sports Business and Sales and take courses connected to those concentrations. The university allows students to take electives from other concentrations too. Georgetown University offers students the chance to do internships too and work for leading sports organizations around the world, including with FIFA and MLB.

About Georgetown University

Georgetown University ranks as one of the best colleges in America. Located in Washington DC, the university uses the Georgetown name because of the neighborhood where its campus sits. Established in 1789 as Georgetown College, it ranks as one of the oldest schools in the east. Founded by the Society of Jesuits, it also ranks as the oldest university in America with an affiliation with this Society as well as the oldest university in the nation affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church.

Washington Monthly ranked Georgetown as the nation’s ninth-best university, while Forbes and ARWU ranked it within the top 100 of schools in America. U.S. News and World Report ranked Georgetown on a global and a national scale and also considers it a highly selective university. It accepts less than 20% of the applications sent in each year. Despite not being an Ivy League university, Georgetown is actually more selective than some of those schools are. It also has a strong reputation for its financial aid packages and because the university will work with students to bring down their total costs. Georgetown University has a low ratio of students to teachers and an enrollment of more than 17,000 students.

Georgetown University Accreditation Details

Georgetown not only has regional accreditation but also the specialty accreditation that applies to its business degree programs. The university’s regional accreditation comes from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Any student who previously attended a graduate school and wants to transfer their credits can do so because of MSCHE accreditation. This also ensures that students can apply for the financial aid they need. Georgetown also has accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), which applies to its sports management and other business programs.

Georgetown University Application Requirements

Applying to the university’s graduate sports management program is easy because Georgetown provides prospective students with a detailed checklist that shows them each step in the process. Georgetown has a priority deadline of March 1 for grad students who want to start classes in the fall. The priority deadline for the spring semester is October 15 and February 1 for the summer semester. Though the university has a rolling admissions policy and will accept applications sent in later, it still requires that students submit all their information by a specific date.

There are six application requirements that students must meet. The first requirement is the university’s application packet. Students can create accounts with the application website and work at a pace that feels comfortable to them. They will pay the $50 application fee when they submit that application. The university then asks for a resume or CV of no more than two pages. This resume should include all of the management and business experience that the student has. Students must also write and submit personal statements of no more than five pages. They should talk about their experiences as well as their future goals.

Georgetown asks students to fill out a reference section and list the names and contact information of two references willing to write letters of recommendation for them. The university will contact those references and let them know how they can submit their letters. Georgetown asks for official transcripts too from any of the colleges that the applicant attended where he or she received credit towards a degree.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The total cost of completing a sports industry management degree at Georgetown University is a little more than $40,000. Students will pay $1,345 per credit hour, which brings the total cost of each class up to $4,035 per class. Georgetown recommends that students submit the FAFSA if they want to use student loans to pay some of their costs. The government offers unsubsidized loans that incur interest while the student is in college. Students must go through both entrance and exit counseling before the university will disperse their loans and before they graduate.

Georgetown has its own Office of Student Financial Services that can provide students with financial aid help. Counselors can help students fill out the FAFSA and understand how the loan process works. They can also learn more about alternative student loans and the scholarships that the university itself offers. Georgetown University also has counselors who can help military veterans and those on active duty status learn about using their military benefits for school.
