Project Management Programs

Students with an interest in project management will find three appealing programs offered by the University of Houston. Though all programs award graduates a Master of Science degree, each one focuses on a different aspect of management. Its technology project management program focuses more on the technical side of management and the design of technology products. The information security management program is best for those who want to work around computers, while the supply chain and logistics program deals more with the various steps in the production line.

The technology project management program features four core classes, including Project Leadership and Team Building and Project Management Principles. Students take Risk Assessment in Project Management to learn how to assess the risks involved with a new project and to find solutions to potential problems. Quality Improvement in Project Management is another required course that focuses on improving the overall quality of the production line and individuals working on a project.

University of Houston students will also take 12 credits of courses relating to the field they want to enter and six credits of electives such as Legal Environment of Management and Stress and Work. The university requires that students take two courses called Project Management Seminar and Integration Project. Those courses allow them to pick up tips on creating projects of their own before they complete and submit a finished project. The university offers several certificate programs for students with an interest in project management too.

About the University of Houston

Established in 1927, the University of Houston is a public university and the main campus in the University of Houston system. Founded as the Houston Junior College, this university initially only offered courses for freshmen and sophomores. Though some students earned a two-year degree from the college, others used the classes they took to transfer to another school. When the college became a four-year school in the 1930s, it switched from offering only evening classes to offering classes during the daytime. It took several decades before the college became a university. The new university went through several name changes before settling on the University of Houston. It also goes by the names of U of H and UH.

University of Houston Accreditation Details

The Global Accreditation Center for Project Management granted accreditation to all three of the graduate programs that U of H offers in project management. This accreditation also applies to the certificate programs in the same field. U of H ensures that each program provides students with the body of knowledge they need to work in project management. The university also has accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and its Commission on Colleges (SACSCC), which acts as regional accreditation. This ensures that students can both apply for financial aid and transfer any of the credits that they earned before taking classes online.

University of Houston Application Requirements

All U of H graduate programs feature the same application and admissions requirements. Students must visit the university’s website and complete the online application, which will go directly to its Office of the Graduate School. This application has a $75 fee that students must pay. They can make a payment online with a card or send a check to the address listed on the application.

Most students will provide only their undergrad transcripts, but those who took any graduate courses must submit transcripts from those grad schools too. Each one should come in a sealed envelope that has the name of the college or university on the front. U of H will not accept unofficial transcripts or those that students send on their own. The university asks for a goals statement that should list any academic goals that the student has for grad school and any professional goals he or she wants to achieve after finishing a degree program. This statement must be at least one page long but no go beyond two pages.

U of H also requires three letters of recommendation and an official test score. Students must score at least 400 on the MAT, 550 or higher on the GMAT or at least 300 on the verbal and reasoning sections of the GRE and 3.5 or higher on the third section of that test. Students can submit their letters of recommendation electronically or through the mail. They should look for academic and professional references who can talk about their skills and best features.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Graduate students pay a rate that U of H bases on their residency status and the number of classes they want to take. Full-time students will typically take around nine credits of classes. If they are a Texas resident, those students will pay around $3,500 a semester. Students who do not live in Texas will pay closer to $8,150 per semester. The exact amount that students pay will vary when they take online classes. The university reduces some of the fees that those students pay because they won’t use the facilities on its Houston campus.

Both online and traditional students have the right to submit the FAFSA. This form sends information to both the federal government and the university itself. U of H will create a unique aid package based on the needs of the student. Grad students often borrow money from the government in the form of student loans. PLUS loans typically have lower interest rates, but unsubsidized loans allow students to borrow more money each year. They can wait to make payments until they graduate or make payments earlier. There are grant and scholarship programs available for graduate students from a range of external sources too. The University of Houston only offers job opportunities for students who live or take classes offline.
