About University of Louisville
The University of Louisville is the largest public university in the city and in the western region of Kentucky. Founded in 1798, it typically goes by the name of U of L today. The university grew rapidly in the 1840s after the state combined several independent campuses together to form one large school. It has a strong reputation for its medical school and medical programs, but the university offers a number of programs for students. Undergrads have access to more than 70 programs, while doctoral candidates and graduate students can enroll in one of 100 different programs.
Both Washington Monthly and U.S. News & World Report rank U of L within the top 200 of all colleges in America. While Forbes also ranks the university on a national level, it ranks lower on that list. The university has a program that allows students working for the UPS air hub to get discounts on tuition. This program also provides book stipends for students and gives those who do well in school bonuses. More than 70 percent of the students working for the company attend the university.
The University of Louisville also has a strong reputation for its athletic programs and especially for its basketball teams, which routinely compete in national championships. More than 22,000 students now attend the U of L each year.
University of Louisville Accreditation Details
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) granted regional accreditation to the U of L and renewed its accreditation in the past. Though the university did have some issues that led to the organization placing it on probation, it now has full accreditation again. It also has accreditation from multiple agencies and organizations, including the American Dental Association (ADA), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) also accredits all the university’s education degree programs.
University of Louisville Application Requirements
U of L is a public university that accepts more than 70 percent of the undergrads who apply every year, but it accepts a smaller number of graduate and doctoral students based on the amount of space available in each program. Students can use the online system and create an account with that system. They can then log back in later to check on the status of their applications and to find out if the university made a decision. Undergrads only need to complete the application and pay the application fee. They can then send their high school transcripts and standardized test scores to the university.
The application process for both graduate students and doctoral candidates is more intensive. Though both use an online application, graduate students will submit test scores from an exam like the GRE and provide letters of recommendation. The university requires that students have degrees from accredited schools before beginning any advanced program. Students studying at either of the higher levels may need to submit resumes, examples of their research and writing skills and personal statements too.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition at the U of L starts at $462 per credit hour for undergrads who are also Kentucky residents. Nonresidents pay $1,088 per credit hour. The university also offers a reduced tuition rate for Indiana residents because Louisville is so close to the border of that state. Graduate students pay $681 per credit hour as a resident and $1,417 per credit hour as a nonresident. Online classes allow students to pay one rate no matter where they live. Undergrads pay $497 per credit hour, while graduate students pay $714 per credit hour. U of L also offers tuition discounts for military students. Those students pay just $250 per credit hour. This discount is only available to active duty military.
Some of the programs that the university offers charge a flat rate rather than a credit hour rate. One example is its MBA program, which costs $32,000 to finish. The university will divide this total into three separate payments and provide students with deadlines as to when they must make their payments.
U of L allows students to use any financial aid that they get to pay their tuition and other costs, but students must use the FAFSA to receive any aid. Federal and state aid can include different types of grants and some loans. There are loan programs for the parents of enrolled college students too. The university offers scholarships to worthy students too. Students who want to apply for any of these scholarships can use the applications available on the University of Louisville website.
