University of Maine

The Maine Business School

Established in 1865, the University of Maine (UMaine) occupies a 660-acre campus situated on Marsh Island in Orono, Maine. Bachelor of Science in Business Administration

The University of Maine’s Bachelor of Science degree program in business administration allows students to major in accounting, international business, management, finance or marketing. This degree requires a minimum of 120 credit hours, and students complete 60 hours of general education courses, 30 credits of business core courses, 15-18 credits in their chosen major and 12-15 hours of electives. Accounting majors planning to take the Certified Public Accountant exam must complete 150 credit hours. The core business courses required for business administration majors provide students a strong foundation in common business concepts including accounting, international business, finance, law, marketing, management information systems, production and operations and strategy. Students must earn a grade of C- or higher in these classes and can also participate in internships to gain real world work experience.

Minor in Business Administration

The Minor in Business Administration at the University of Maine is one of three minors the business school offers, and it requires completion of 24 credit hours with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0. The eight required three-hour courses provide students with knowledge of accounting, business finance, macroeconomics, management and organization, marketing and microeconomics. Students also take a general psychology course plus a three-hour business elective. They can declare a business minor in their second semester of study and must complete at least half of the required courses at UMaine. In addition, students must complete their business minor courses with a minimum grade of C- in each course.

MBA

The Maine Business School prepares its MBA graduates for leadership roles in a competitive global market and helps them develop ethical decision making skills along with creative thinking strategies and leadership and problem-solving skills. UMaine’s MBA program requires 39 credits including six experiential credits consisting of an internship or international trip. Students take seven core business classes and four electives in a concentration of their choice and can choose full-time or part-time study and select from day, evening or online classes. Most students complete the program within two years, and it’s possible for full-time students who have completed the required foundation courses to finish in less time. Professionals with a minimum of three years of management experience can complete the Professional MBA program which allows them to waive the internship requirement.

University of Southern Maine

College of Management and Human Service

The University of Southern Maine (USM) serves around 9,300 students from over 40 states and 36 countries and prepares its graduates for industry and community leadership roles. Founded in 1878, USM maintains campuses in Portland, Gorham and Lewiston with the main campus in Portland. BS in Business Administration

USM’s School of Business offers a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with majors in management, accounting, international business, marketing, finance, risk management and sustainable business. The curriculum provides students with a liberal arts foundation and helps them develop management abilities for a changing economy. Students complete a minimum of 120 credit hours for the degree consisting of general education courses along with 36 hours of core business courses and 15-22 hours of required courses in the students’ selected major. Business administration majors can also participate in internships to gain on-the-job learning experiences, and interns must work at least 140 hours on site during their internships. Students must complete at least half of their courses at USM and must earn a grade of C- or higher in each class.

Minor in Business Administration

USM’s minor in business administration allows students from multiple majors throughout the university take courses to develop management skills. Only students in majors outside the School of Business are eligible for a minor in business administration, and the minor requires completion of 21 credits. Admission requirements include completion of a minimum of 12 credits at USM with a grade point average of at least 2.33. Students can transfer a maximum of nine credit hours into the minor and must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.33 in the required courses. Course options include introduction to business, financial and managerial accounting, personal finance, marketing, managing organizational behavior, information technology/management information systems, risk management and insurance, macroeconomics and microeconomics. Students can also participate in internships and receive three hours of credit for their internship.

MBA

USM’s Master of Business Administration program emphasizes ethical decision making in an international business environment and provides students with management and analytical skills necessary for professional success. USM’s MBA program is designed to accommodate the needs of working professionals and offers day, evening and summer courses. Students can pursue either part-time or full-time study. The degree requires 30 credit hours of core courses plus nine hours of electives. Depending on a student’s previous academic history, up to 15 hours of foundation courses may also be required. In addition, USM requires that all MBA students have basic computer skills including word processing and spreadsheet skills. Students can also select one of four optional MBA concentrations including Accounting, Finance, Health Management and Policy and Sustainability. The concentrations require nine credit hours of concentration courses which replace the electives in the 39-hour MBA program.
